All Hail! Hail! Hail!

If you're wondering why everyone in the photo above is wearing Red and Gold and is decked with pom-poms, it's because the reunion committee made an ad hoc appearance at the Perry and Price Saturday Morning Radio show live on June 16, 2012 at the Jade Dynasty Restaurant. Talk about a Gung Ho bunch (pun intended), the committee feasted on dim sum, pork hash, spring rolls and rice soup. The committee was hoping for a reunion exclusive but lo and behold, the Roosevelt High School Class of 1967 and McKinley High School Class of 1972 also showed up on the same day to promote their reunions. The highlight of the event was the singing of the RHS Alama Mater by both Rough Rider classes. As of this writing, we have nearly 90 committed to attend (almost half of our target). The reunion committee is leaning heavily on hawaiian food as the buffet theme selection for the party. After studying the options provided by the Ala Moana Hotel F&B department, the hawaiian combination offers the most economical variety. For those who love food, that means "more bang for the buck." The current working menu includes the following pupus: lomi lomi salmon, poke, chinese chicken salad and possibly poi (depending if it is available at the time of the event). Entrees include kalua pig, mahimahi and pulehu ribs. There'll be a nice dessert table too including guava chiffon and liliquoi cakes and haupia. The dinner buffet is open from 7 to 8:45 pm. The no host cockail bar is open from 6 to 10 pm. So come with an empty stomach...it's all you can eat, baby!

With hotel commitments made and contracts signed, what we need now is a strong body count of reunion attendees. Please consider making an early decision to come to the reunion. You can always pay later or change your mind, but we need to get the momentum going. Call your friends! Plan your summer vacations! Please, please come and make this our best reunion ever. Calling all hula maidens!

Okay, maybe you had a hula class in elementary school. Or maybe you've shuttled your daughter back and forth between hula classes and soccer practice. Or maybe you're a closet Merrie Monarch contestant just dying to impress your friends and classmates. Well, here's your chance! We're calling all hula dancers to join our IHD (Improvised Hula Demonstration) and perform a simple hula at our 40th reunion. There'll be numerous practice sessions to un-creak the rusty joints and it'll all be for fun and camaraderie. Sally Blackiston Chun is learning the hula and will be using our class song: "The Days Of My Youth" by Kui Lee. If you're interested, drop us a note at rhs72email@yahoo.com. Ke aloha no....

Unprecedented line up of reunion entertainment.

Yvonne Elliman has agreed to perform at our 40th reunion party. Thanks to special arrangements made by classmate Joe Hee, Yvonne will take the stage and grace us with a few of her classic rock songs from the 70's. Who can forget "If I Can't Have You", "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Hello Stranger." A 1969 graduate, Yvonne Elliman is arguably the most famous Roosevelt High School alumni (but don't tell that to Bruno Mars). Don't miss this opportunity to see and hear a real life rock legend in the same circle of acquaintances as the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Broadway and movie performance casts of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Joining Yvonne on stage will be another musical talent, Sandy Tsukiyama. Sandy is a 1971 RHS graduate and is currently a Spanish teacher on the Roosevelt campus. She hosts a radio program on Hawaii Public Radio station KHPR called "Brazilian Experience." As it happens, Sandy fell in love with the Spanish language and Music Theory at Roosevelt HS and continued her studies at the UH and then to Brazil where she earned a degree from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She is trained in classical Brazilian Canto and sings Brazilian folk, traditional and jazz music in Spanish and Portuguese. Oh by the way, Sandy was Class President at Roosevelt High School.

Another musical connection with RHS is the band White Light. You may remember them from the old Spencecliff Restaurant disco circuit in the mid-Seventies; they performed at the Hawaiian Hut, Hula Hut, Tiki Broiler, Beef 'n Grog and Magic Mushroom. White Light recently reunited to play the 70's reunion events held at various hotels in Waikiki. Original members in the band include Arex Ikehara ('71) and Joy (Kamisato) Waikoloa ('74), Tommy Kamisato ('73) and Layne Maeoka ('70). White Light is the opening dance band and will play back up for Yvonne and Sandy.

Closing the evening's entertainment is Hawaii's top dance club band, Funkshun bringing their unique blend of 70's and 80's disco funk rock music to the Hibiscus Ballroom. Sporting an 11-piece band with horns and brass, Funkshun can be seen at various dance clubs around town including The Showroom at Hawaiian Brian's, Ige's Restaurant and 19th Puka and Gordon Biersch Lanai Bar as well as at numerous dance parties.

This is the reunion of all reunions. Even if you missed the 10th, 20th or 30th, the 40th RHS '72 reunion is definitely the one worth showing up for. Sign up today!
 

The site selection debate went down to the wire with Ala Moana collecting more committee votes than Pacific Beach. Ala Moana's ample parking, convenient location, room availability and overall ambiance made it the winning choice. Renewed relations with the hotel's F&B and marketing departments was the key to selecting Ala Moana as the official location. The hotel's marketing department's assurance of working within our budget was welcomed.

Hotel rooms rates are $109 per night for the Kona Tower and $129 per night at the Waikiki Tower.

Other details still pending are menu selection, decoration and band & sound system logistics.

The committee will continue developing an agenda and guest invitation list.

It's official, we're having a reunion...

Thanks to Herbie Nagasawa, the Roosevelt High School graphic arts class and the RHS administration, we now have a reunion banner. Viewable from Nehoa Avenue, the vinyl sign proudly proclaims the date of the event and the website url. The banner was created by the art students for just the cost of materials. But expect the banner to change locations periodically. The Hawaii School system only allows banners to be up for 2 weeks then down for 1 day. A facilities authorization form has to be approved before any 2-week period of time. Any volunteers to move the sign every two weeks?

Party planning animals.

So who are these crazy people willing to put so much time and energy into planning the reunion? People who have been attending the meetings include Allan Akamine, Jan Choy, Sally Blackiston Chun, Joe Hee, Melanie Luke Horikami, Alan Ito, Paul Kaneaiakala, Craig Kaneshiro, Verna Shiroma Koyanagi, Blossom Kua, Herbie Nagasawa, Jean Hinahara Nakagawa, Alison Kam Romero, Kennard Kane Takehara, Edmund Urabe, William Watanabe and Gale Yamasaki Yamada. Kudos to them!
